In-Situ Repairs for Ship Bow Thruster Motors

Specialist On-Board Repairs

SC Rewinds was tasked with an in-situ bearing replacement on two 850kW ship bow thruster motors that could not be removed from the vessel.

A team of three engineers was deployed to carry out the work directly on board.

Step-by-Step Repair Process

  1. Uncoupling & Positioning
    • Motors were uncoupled from the bow thrusters
    • Lifted and relocated to a suitable area on the lower deck for access
  2. Non-Drive End Bearing Replacement
  • Fan cowl and cooling fan removed
  • Non-drive end frame removed to access bearing
  • 150-ton hydraulic bearing puller used to extract old bearing
  • Portable induction heater used to expand and fit new bearing
  • Bearing greased and components reassembled
  1. Drive End Bearing Replacement
  • Coupling removed from drive end shaft
  • Old bearing extracted using hydraulic puller
  • New bearing expanded and fitted using induction heater
  • Coupling refitted to shaft
  1. Final Reassembly

Both motors repositioned and recoupled to the bow thrusters

Successful Completion & Sign-Off

After reassembly, the ship’s engineers test ran both bow thruster motors. Upon confirming full functionality and performance, the job was signed off as successfully completed—meeting all operational and safety standards.
